Suprax Information:

Suprax (generic name: Cefixime) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic prescribed to treat various bacterial infections that are caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is usually indicated for the treatment of infections of the urinary tract, tonsils, pharynx, bronchus, the middle ear (otitis media), and also uncomplicated gonorrhea. Suprax is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic and it works by breaking down the cell wall of bacteria during their active replication phase. To prevent the development or spread of antimicrobial resistance, Suprax should only be prescribed where the result of a sensitivity test or the local epidemiological data of antimicrobial susceptibility support its use.

Suprax Side Effects:

As with any other drugs, Suprax may cause some side effects, some of which may be mild and transient while some may persist and require immediate medical attention. In addition, these side effects do not happen in the same way to everyone. The common side effects of Suprax include stomach upset, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, sore throat, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, anxiety, drowsiness, frequent nighttime urination, runny nose, cough, and vaginal itching or discharge. Call in to see a doctor if you experience any severe side effects while using Suprax, and this may include intense abdominal discomfort, high fever, yellowing of the eyes or skin, sudden changes in the amount of urine, unusual fatigue, bruising or bleeding, mood changes and confusion.

Suprax Directions:

Suprax is supplied as 400 mg and 200 mg fixed-dose tablets for oral use. The pediatric formulation is available as 100mg/5ml powder for suspension. The recommended dose of Suprax for adults and children above 12 years is 400 mg daily. This may be taken as a single dose or split into 2 half doses given every 12 hours for a minimum of 5 days. Take Suprax tablets with water after meals to minimize abdominal side effects. The recommended pediatric dose of Suprax is 8 mg/kg/day of the suspension based on the weight of the child. This may be administered as a single daily dose or may be given in two divided doses, as 4 mg/kg every 12 hours. Reconstitute Suprax powder into suspension following the manufacturer's instructions on the package insert and shake the bottle of the suspension before each use to ensure uniform dosage.

Suprax Precautions:

You should not take Suprax if you are allergic to Cefixime, any cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics, or any other ingredients contained in Suprax. Your doctor will make a careful inquiry into your medication history before prescribing you this drug. Tell your doctor about your medical conditions, especially if you have or had:
• Blood clotting diseases;
• Chronic kidney disease;
• Phenylketonuria that may be worsened by aspartame use;
• Seizures

Tell your doctor about all prescriptions and OTC medications, herbs, and supplements you are taking or planning to take. In particular, Suprax may raise the level of the anticonvulsant medication carbamazepine, and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant drugs like warfarin. Suprax may give a false-positive reaction when testing for ketones in the urine. Disclose your current medications to your lab scientist if you are undergoing a lab investigation. Also, inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or pregnant while you are prescribed Suprax. Always use this medication exactly as directed.
