Zoloft Information:

Zoloft (generic name: Sertraline) is a drug for the treatment of symptoms in patients with depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, panic disorder, anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is an antidepressant, and falls in to the category of drugs called selective serotonin and neropinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). In patients with any of the mentioned disorders, the chemicals in the brain become imbalanced. These chemicals are important to the workings of emotion and behaviour. If an imbalance in these chemicals occurs, then this can cause emotional instability and issues, which can cause illnesses like depression and anxiety disorder. In patients with depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder and panic disorder, they may experience symptoms such as agitation and irritability, panic attacks, insomnia, hostility, unusual behaviour and thought patterns, suicidal tendencies, delusions and in some cases hallucinations (including visual and audible hallucinations). Zoloft is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which displays disturbing emotional and physical symptoms before a menstrual period. The symptoms of PMDD usually disappear once the period has started.

Zoloft Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Zoloft including dry mouth, mild nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea and drowsiness. More serious side effects may include more severe nausea, vomiting, stomach pain/upset stomach, itchy skin, loss of appetite leading to weight change, dark stool, stiff muscles, feeling agitated, hallucinations, changes in heartbeat, fever, feeling faint, painful urination, bruising easily, unusual bleeding, headaches, feeling weak, changes in breathing, problems with memory and difficulty concentrating . If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Zoloft Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Zoloft to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Zoloft comes in tablet and liquid form. You should swallow Zoloft tablets whole with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. It is important that you do not break or crush Zoloft as it is designed to release the drug at a safe rate, and crushing may result in too much of the drug being released at once which can have unfavourable effects. The liquid form should be diluted before taking. In this case use the dropper to measure the correct amount of liquid and mix with water or orange juice. Zoloft should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Zoloft Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Zoloft, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including liver and kidney disease, seizures, epilepsy, bipolar disorder or previous suicidal feelings or attempts and a history of drug abuse. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Zoloft, including blood thinners such as warfarin, digitoxin, tramadol, phenytoin, lithium, other antidepressants, heart medications and almotiptan. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Zoloft may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
