Aygestin Information:

Aygestin (generic name: Norethindrone) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of abnormal bleeding from the uterus in women caused by hormone imbalances. It is also used for birth control to prevent pregnancy, as well as other menstrual disorders and endometriosis. It is a type of hormone called progesterone which occurs naturally in the body, and it works by preventing ovulation, which is the release of eggs from the ovary to the uterus. Aygestin also causes changes to the mucus in the cervix (the entrance to the uterus), and the uterine lining which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. It also makes it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the lining of the uterus. Endometriosis is a condition whereby tissue from the lining of the uterus is found in other parts of the body. It is still unknown how this condition occurs or what the cause is.
