Exforge (Amlodipine/Valsartan)

Exforge Information:

Exforge (generic name: Amlodipine/Valsartan) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Valsartan is a diuretic which belongs to the group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Diuretics help to prevent the body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Too much salt in the blood can cause high blood pressure, putting strain on the heart and increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker, and works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels. Many patients with hypertension do not have any symptoms at all, which is why it has been dubbed ‘the silent killer’, it is therefore recommended that after age 60 you have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis – at least once every 6 months. Some people may experience symptoms such as dizziness and feelings of nausea. Exforge works by keeping the blood vessels from narrowing, meaning that blood pressure is kept at a lower level. Hypertension is more common in women than men and the risk increases with age.

Exforge Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Exforge including dizziness, sensation of spinning, cold symptoms such as stuffy/runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. More serious side effects may include feeling as though you might pass out, swelling in the hands or feet, rapid weight gain, fast or pounding heartbeat, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), chest pain, nausea, sweating and generally feeling ill. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Exforge Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Exforge to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Exforge comes in tablet form. You should swallow Exforge whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew tablets as this may cause for too much of the drug to be released at once. Exforge should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Exforge Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Exforge, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including kidney or liver disease, congestive heart failure, angina, severe coronary artery disease, if you are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea or if you have suffered from a heart attack. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Exforge, including heart medications, potassium supplements, salt substitutes, diuretics and other medications that lower blood pressure. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Exforge may cause harm to unborn and new born babies. Do not drink alcohol while taking Exforge as this may increase the side effects of the drug. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes while taking Exforge.
