Sensipar (generic name: Cinacalcet, also known as Mimpara) is a medication that will increase the sensitivity of the parathyroid gland to the substance calcium in our bodies. This will then cause a decrease in the levels of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium and also phosphorous in the body.

Sensipar is commonly used today, to treat conditions such as hyperparathyroidism which is an over activity of the parathyroid glands, in people who are on a long term dialysis for problems such as kidney disease. You should not take Sensipar if you are known to be allergic to Cinacalcet, and you should inform your doctor if you have or currently suffer from any of the following symptoms. High blood pressure heart disease, seizures, low levels of calcium or any form of liver disease can cause you greater health problems, if you use Sensipar as a medication to treat a different problem. At the current time it is not known whether Sensipar will harm the unborn baby, so it is recommended as the safest practise, to stop using Sensipar if you are planning to become pregnant or are in fact pregnant at the time of prescription. It is also still not known if Sensipar can be found in the breast milk of women who feed their child in this way, again it would be the best practise to not allow your child to feed from yourself and also to cease breast feeding until we are entirely sure of the effects on children.
