This medicine is an acyclic nucleotide analog used to treat a chronic viral infection of the liver (hepatitis B). It works by slowing the growth of the virus. It is not a cure for hepatitis B.
Hepsera Side Effects:
Side effects that may occur while taking this medicine include weakness, headache, fever, increased cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, sore throat, or stomach upset. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unusual weakness or fatigue, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, light-colored stools, loss of appetite, abdominal or stomach pain with or without nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, muscle aches or weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, coldness (especially in the arms or legs), trouble breathing (such as rapid breathing or very shallow breathing), fast or irregular heartbeat, or a change in the amount of urine you produce. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
Hepsera Directions:
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Store in the original container at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. Continue to take the medication even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible that day. Do not take more than 1 dose per day. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Hepsera Precautions:
Do not take this medication if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. This medication will not stop you from spreading hepatitis B. Treatment with adefovir alone is not appropriate for patients infected with both hepatitis B and HIV. An HIV test is recommended both before and during treatment to ensure you receive appropriate treatment. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Worsening of your condition, decreased response to therapy, or the occurrence of resistant strains of the virus may occur during or after treatment. Promptly report any new symptoms that occur during or after treatment to your doctor. FOR WOMEN: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy.
