Azilect Information:

Azilect (generic name: Rasagiline) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disease which causes patients to suffer a breakdown of their nervous system, and sometimes loss of memory. It is a progressive disease whereby patients slowly lose more and more control of their body. Azilect is a monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor and it works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. Azilect now helps to treat over two million people worldwide with Parkinson’s disease due to its effectiveness, and in clinical trials patients experienced a slower rate of decline in thinking ability compared with patients who were given placebo medications. Rasagiline is also sometimes used with another drug called Levodopa to increase its strength. Parkinson’s disease is irreversible; however it can be slowed with the help of drugs such as Azilect.

Azilect Side Effects:

As with any medication, there may be side effects including nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, easy bruising or bleeding, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite, weight loss, joint pain, anxiety, aggression, skin rash, hair loss, impotence, redness of the eyes and urinating more than normal. More severe side effects including cough, tight chest, fever, difficulty breathing, confusion, hallucinations, sudden numbness or weakness, lack of co-ordination fainting, seizures, plane skin and increased blood pressure. If you experience any side effects you should seek medical attention for safety.

Azilect Directions:

You should always follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribes your medication, however directions and dosage will also be noted on the packet. Azilect comes in tablet form. Azilect can be taken with or without food. Your doctor may change the dosage occasionally in order to ensure that the medication is effective. You must not stop taking Azilect or change the amount that you take without the prior consent of a doctor as this can be dangerous. Do not crush or chew tablets as the drug may be released too quickly which can have undesirable effects. Store Azilect in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.

Azilect Precautions:

If you have an allergy to any of the ingredients it is important that you do not take Azilect, and that you inform your doctor. You must also inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including epilepsy or seizure disorders, cataracts, liver or kidney disease and bladder infection. Azilect may also interact with other medicines, and it is therefore essential to disclose to your doctor any other medications that you are currently taking including ciprofloxacin, over the counter cough and cold medications and antidepressants. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive, you should always consult a doctor before taking any medications.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
