Benzaclin Information:
Benzaclin is a combination medication gel consisting of an antibiotic (Clindamycin1%) and an anti acne agent (benzoyl peroxide 5%). It is used to treat moderate acne vulgaris consisting of comedones (commonly referred to as blackheads) and imflammatory pustules/papules (the reddish lesions commonly reffered to as pimples). The 2 active ingredients in Benzaclin work by killing the anaerobic bacteria that is causing the acne. It is important to note that Benzaclin will work to treat moderate, NOT SEVERE, forms of acne.
Benzaclin Side Effects:
Generally, Benzaclin is very well tolerated, and because of this it is used very commonly to treat moderate acne. The potential side effects and their percentage of occurrence is listed below.
- Dry skin (12%)
- Peeling (2%)
- Itching (2%)
- Redness (1%)
It is also important to note that these side-effects usually appear initially in the beginning of treatment and will go away with time. The most common side effect (dry skin) may be treated with a non-allergenic moisturizer such as Cetaphil lotion.
Benzaclin Directions:
The results for Benzaclin will vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of the acne and the patients tolerance to Benzaclin. Results have varied with some patients seeing a noticeable improvement in 1 week to other patients not seeing a result until 1 month. If stated in general, a patient should see an improvement within the first 2 months of Benzaclin treatment. Additionally, it is important for the patient to note that acne may worsen at the onset of treatment with Benzaclin, this is not a major concern as this occurs commonly with any acne treatment. The usual duration of treatment will be for 3-4 months, however, this duration may be increased or decreased based on individual results.
Benzaclin Precautions:
Benzaclin contains in their formulation an ingredient called Clindamycin. Clindamycin when used intravenously and as a capsule/tablet/liquid form has been shown to occasionally cause a certain type of diarrhea called C. difficile diarrhea. A very small percentage of patients taking Benzaclin may experience this side effect. However, it is advised that anyone with a history of the following conditions refrain from taking Benzaclin.
- regional enteritis.
- ulcerative colitis.
- patient with a history of antibiotic-associated colitis.
Benzaclin should also be avoided in children less than 12 years old, geriatric patients greater than 65 years old, and in pregnant or nursing women. None of these patient groups have been studied in terms of safety with Benzaclin.
