Uroxatral (generic name: Alfuzosin Hydrochloride, also known as Besavar XL) is a drug for the treatment of symptoms in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. It belongs to the group of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. The active ingredient, alfuzosin, works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and neck of the bladder, which makes it easier to urinate. Enlarged prostate simply means that the prostate gland has grown larger. It is common and happens to almost all men as they grow older. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra (the passage where urine passes through), so as the prostate gland becomes larger it squeezes on the urethra making it difficult or even impossible to urinate. This leads to discomfort, and can be dangerous if left untreated. The causes of enlarged prostate are not very well understood, however experts believe that it is linked to the testicles, as men who have them removed before puberty do not suffer from enlarged prostate. It occurs in more than half of men in their 60s, and as many as 90% of men in their 70s and 80s.
Uroxatral Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Uroxatral including mild dizziness, fatigue, headache and cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throat and stuffy nose. More serious side effects may include new/worsening chest pain, erection that is painful or lasts over 4 hours, feeling faint, nausea, stomach pain, fever, loss of appetite and jaundice (yellowing of the skin around the eyes, and on hands or feet).
