Catapres Information:

Catapres (Clonidine) is used alone or with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure is important to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Clonidine is also used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, drug withdrawal (such as alcohol, opioids, or nicotine), menopausal flushing, diarrhea, spasticity, and certain pain conditions. Clonidine stimulates alpha-adrenoceptors in the brain stem. This results in a reduced sympathetic outflow from the central nervous system and decreased peripheral resistance, renal vascular resistance, heart rate, and blood pressure. It lowers blood pressure by decreasing the levels of certain chemicals in your blood. This allows your blood vessels to relax and your heart to beat more slowly and easily. It is used as an off-label drug for episodic insomnia, anxiety, and other uses.

Catapres Side Effects:

Catapres may interact with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing (such as sleeping pills, narcotics, muscle relaxers, or medicines for anxiety, depression, or seizures), clonidine transdermal skin patches, digoxin, antidepressants, beta-blockers, and other drugs to treat high blood pressure or heart problems. Inform your doctor before using any other drug. The most common side effects of Catapres include dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, constipation, headache, nausea, and trouble sleeping (insomnia). Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

Catapres may also cause serious side effects including withdrawal symptoms, nervousness, agitation, headache, tremor, and rapid rise in blood pressure. Get medical help right away, if you experience any of the symptoms listed above. Other possible but less common side effects are mental depression, swelling of the feet and lower legs, blistering, burning, crusting, dryness, or flaking of the skin, chest pain, confusion as to time, place, or person, decreased urine output, irregular heartbeat or pulse, fever, irritability and so on. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you have any of these. Not all side effects are listed, others may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor.

Catapres Directions:

Catapres is taken as 0.1 mg tablet twice daily (morning and bedtime). Elderly patients may use a lower initial dose. The dose of 0.1 mg may be increased at weekly intervals if necessary until the desired response is achieved. Using the larger portion of the oral daily dose at bedtime may minimize the effects of dry mouth and drowsiness. The most common dose prescribed ranges from 0.2 mg to 0.6 mg per day in divided doses. A dose of 2.4 mg is the maximum effective daily dose, however, this high dose is rarely used. Take Catapres by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. If the doses are not equal, take the larger dose at bedtime to decrease the risk of side effects. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly and take it at the same time each day. Keep using it even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.

Catapres Precautions:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Clonidine (including having a rash while using clonidine patches) or if you have any other allergies. It contains inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before taking Catapres to ensure safety, tell your doctor if you have:
● Heart attack or stroke;
● Heart disease or severe coronary artery disease;
● Heart rhythm disorder, slow heartbeats;
● High or low blood pressure;
● History of fainting spells;
● Kidney disease;
Pheochromocytoma (tumour of the adrenal gland);

Clonidine may affect fertility in men or women. Pregnancy could be harder to achieve while either parent is using this medicine. If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor if you notice somnolence, tiredness, rapid breathing, and poor feeding in the nursing baby. Clonidine may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other products that cause drowsiness such as antihistamines (such as cetirizine, and diphenhydramine), drugs for sleep or anxiety, muscle relaxants, and opioid pain relievers like codeine. Catapres is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
