Prevacid Information:
Prevacid (generic name: Lansoprazole) is a drug for the treatment of the symptoms of duodenal and gastric ulcers. It is also prescribed for erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus by stomach acid), and other conditions which involve high levels of stomach acid including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Lansoprazole works by blocking acid production in the stomach. Prevacid belongs to the group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors and reduces the levels of stomach acid, and helps to heal damage to the esophagus from stomach acid, as well reducing the symptoms from ulcers. Duodenal ulcers are located in the tube at the exit of the stomach, while gastric ulcers occur in the stomach. Prevacid is sometimes prescribed in conjunction with antibiotics to clear ulcers. People with ulcers are sometimes found to have bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, and antibiotics with Prevacid will also help to clear these bacteria which help ulcers to heal. It is not to be used for immediate relief from heartburn symptoms.
Prevacid Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Prevacid including headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain. More serious side effects may include allergic reaction which usually involves swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips and face. Prevacid Directions:
