Levaquin Information:

Levaquin (generic name: Levofloxacin) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate. It is also used to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis or pneumonia, and to treat people who have been exposed to anthrax. Levaquin (levofloxacin) is in a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones and works by fighting the bacteria in the body that cause infections. Fluoroquinolones are concentration-dependent drugs, meaning they kill bacteria more efficiently when a higher amount of medicine reaches the area of infection. Antibiotics—also known as antibacterial or antimicrobial drugs—fight bacterial infections by killing bacteria, or by slowing or stopping bacterial growth. While antibiotics like Levaquin were first used in the 1940s, they continue to transform medical care today by dramatically reducing illness and death from infectious diseases.

Levaquin Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Levaquin including mild nausea, constipation, mild diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headache and vaginal itching or discharge. More serious side effects may include severe dizziness, fainting, fast or pounding heartbeat, sudden pain, snapping or popping sounds in the ears, bruising, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, watery or bloody diarrhea, confusion, hallucinations, depression, tremors, feeling restless, unusual thoughts or behavior, insomnia, nightmares, seizures, pale skin, weakness,, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, numbness, burning pain, tingly feeling in the hands or feet and a severe skin reaction. If you experience any side effects you must seek immediate medical attention for safety.

Levaquin Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed it you, and there will also be dosage and information on the pack. Levaquin comes in tablet form and should be taken with a full glass of water, followed by several extra glasses throughout the day. It can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, break or chew Levaquin as this can cause too much of the drug to be released at once which can have undesirable effects. Levaquin should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and heat. As with any antibiotic drug, ensure that you take the full course of tablets that was prescribed to you to prevent a relapse.

Levaquin Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Levaquin you should not take it, and should inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease, a heart rhythm disorder, joint problems, a history of allergy to antibiotics, seizures or epilepsy, muscle weakness, trouble breathing, a personal or family history of Long QT Syndrome or low potassium levels. You should consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications, as they may interact with Levaquin including blood thinners, diabetic medications, theophylline, other antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-malarials, nausea or vomiting medications, psychiatric medications, migraine medications, narcotics, NSAIDs and steroids. Consult your doctor if you are planning to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding as Levaquin may cause harm to your baby. Levaquin is known to cause thoughts of suicide, and if you notice any such thoughts you must seek immediate medical attention.
