Chantix Information:

Chantix (generic name: Varenicline) is a drug which is prescribed for patients who want to quit smoking. It treats the nicotine withdrawals symptoms which aid giving up smoking by working with the brain to block the pleasurable effects of smoking. It is used together with behaviour modification and therapy. Smoking is the leading cause of lung disease, and people who smoke also increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and mouth or throat cancer. Smoking is also harmful as cigarettes and tobacco contain approximately 4000 chemicals, and hundreds of these are toxic and cause harm to the body. Varenicline is highly addictive, and so people who quit smoking commonly get withdrawal symptoms, and may feel extremely agitated or stressed. Chantix helps to reduce these feelings by stopping the chemicals in the brain that make you feel as though the nicotine is having a pleasurable effect. Overall, Chantix is effective in helping a patient quit smoking (almost 3 times greater than placebo) at 1 year from the start of treatment.

Chantix Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Chantix including headache, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting, constipation, gas, weakness, fatigue, increased in appetite, unpleasant taste in the mouth, headache and insomnia. More serious side effects may include fever, sore throat, headache and blistering of the skin. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Chantix Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Chantix to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Chantix comes in tablet form. Chantix should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Chantix Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Chantix, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including coronary artery disease, circulation problems, history of stroke, blood clot or heart attack, untreated high blood pressure, mouth or dental problems, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, stomach ulcer, asthma and bronchitis. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Chantix, including cold or insulin, blood thinners and theophylline. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Chantix may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
