Lactulose Information:

Lactulose (generic: Lactulose) is an oral liquid solution used for chronic constipation. It is a laxative which helps stools to move more easily through the bowels. Lactulose is a type of synthetic (man-made) sugar, and is broken down in the large intestine into mild acids which draw water into the colon. It is a disaccharide (double sugar) which is created from one molecule each of the simple sugars fructose and glucose. This helps to soften stools which make them easier to pass, relieving constipation. If chronic constipation is left untreated for too long is can lead to fecal loading or fecal impaction, which is when the stools become compacted in the bowels and cause and obstruction meaning that no stools can be passed. This can be fatal and may require surgery to remove the obstruction. Lactulose is different to other laxatives because it is safe to take every day and can be taken for years, which is good for patients who suffer from constipation on a regular basis.

Lactulose Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Lactulose including bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and aching in the abdomen. More serious side effects may include swelling of the face, lips or mouth from an allergic reaction, and ongoing dirrhea. If you experience any side effects you should stop taking Lactulose until the side effects disappear. If side effects continue you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Lactulose Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Lactulose to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Lactulose comes in liquid and powder form. For the liquid form, you should take Lactulose followed by a glass of water. It comes with a special measuring spoon or cup, and you should take the recommended dose. For the powder form, mix the powder with a good amount of water and drink the mixture. If the smaller dose does not relieve the constipation you may increase the dose. It may take up to 48 hours before the Lactulose begins to have an effect. Lactulose should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Lactulose Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Lactulose, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including diabetes, intestinal problems or conditions, stomach problems, bad bacteria in the intestines or severe diarrhea. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Lactulose, including insulin and diabetes medications. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Lactulose could cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
