Flomax (generic name: Tamsulosin Hydrochloride extended-release capsule) is a drug prescribed for men who have an enlarged prostate gland (gland just below your bladder), called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition is not cancerous, and causes difficulty in urination and to feel an urge to pass common frequently. When a man has BPH and tries to urinate, the urine moves into the tissue of the prostate from the bladder through a passage. If the prostate swells this presses on the passage and may cause it to close off altogether which means that it becomes impossible to urinate. Flomax is an alpha blocker, and works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate, and also opens up the passage to the prostate so that urine can be passed.
Flomax Side Effects:
As with any drug there may be side effects from Flomax, which may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, insomnia, decreased appetite, upset stomach, and itching. More severe side effects may include swelling of the lips or mouth, and if you experience any of these side effects you must consult a doctor immediately. Another common side effect of Flomax is dizziness when standing up. If you experience this side effect the advice is to stand up slowly to avoid dizziness. You may also experience retrograde ejaculation, however ejaculation fluid does not spurt, and most of the fluid goes back into the bladder. This does not cause pain.
Flomax comes in tablet form and should be taken as directed by the doctor who prescribed it to you. There are also directions and dosage information inside the pack. Flomax is to be taken once daily, usually following a meal. You must not crush or open the capsule. Swallow the capsule with a glass of water to ensure that it is safely transported to the stomach. If you miss a dose, you must take it as soon as you remember so long as this is within the same day.
Flomax is intended for men only. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients you must not take Flomax, and should inform your doctor. You must also inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions such as angina, high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, if you are taking other medications to relax muscle, or have had a recent heart attack. Consult your doctor before taking Flomax if you are taking any other medications as some medicines may interact with Flomax. Medicines that may interact include cimetidine, although you should also mention any others. Before taking Flomax you must be tested for prostate cancer, and should continue to be tested every 12 months.
