Protonix (generic name: Pantoprazole) is a drug prescribed for the treatment of the symptoms of duodenal and gastric ulcers. It is also directed for the treatment of erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus by stomach acid), and other conditions which involve high levels of stomach acid including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and works by reducing the levels of stomach acid, and helping to heal damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid, as well a decreasing acid in the stomach, and reducing the symptoms from ulcers. Duodenal ulcers are located in the tube at the exit of the stomach, while gastric ulcers occur in the stomach. Protonix is sometimes prescribed in conjunction with antibiotics to clear ulcers. People with ulcers are sometimes found to have bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, and antibiotics with Protonix will also help to clear these bacteria which help ulcers to heal.
Protonix Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Protonix including rashes, itching, headache, upset stomach, insomnia, diarrhea and nervousness or anxiety. More serious side effects may include swelling of the face, throat and mouth, difficulty breathing and hives. Protonix Directions:

Long term use of Protonix may make it difficult for your body to absorb vitamin B12, which may lead to a deficiency. Symptoms of B12 deficiency may include paleskin, feeling weak, fatigue and changes in heart rate.
