Genoptic Information:

Genoptic (generic name - Gentamicin Sulfate) is used in treating bacterial infections of the eyes, the skin around the eyes (such as the eyelids), and the ear (especially the generic alternative). It is also used to prevent bacterial infections of the eye after surgery or eye injury. Gentamicin belongs to a class of antibiotic medications called aminoglycosides. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby killing the bacteria. It only works in treating infections caused by bacteria, not infections caused by other microorganisms such as viruses.

Other more serious side effects associated with the use of Gentamicin Sulfate include pain, swelling, thick discharge or pus in the eyes or ears, easy bruising, bleeding, mental/mood changes (such as hallucinations), rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness, and difficulty in breathing. Genoptic Directions:

The appropriate dose (quantified in drops) depends on your medication conditions and response to treatment. Therefore follow your doctor's instructions on the use of this drug. You can also find useful information on the pack or leaflet. Ensure you wash your hands first before use. Tilt your head backward, and look upward. Pull the lower eyelid away from the eye with your index finger to make space. Apply the appropriate number of drops into the space and gently let go of the eyelid. Keep your eyes closed for 1-2 mins and do not blink or rub your eye. Remove any contact lenses before applying this drug. Do not apply the contact lens without checking with your doctor first. If you are using another kind of eye medication (such as drops or ointments), wait at least 5 minutes after applying Genoptic before applying other medications.

The generic form of this drug can also be used to treat bacterial infections in the ear. To apply in the ear, wash your hands first. Lie down or tilt the head so that the infected ear faces up. Gently pull the earlobe up and back for adults (down and back for children) to straighten the ear canal. Drop the medicine into the ear canal. Keep the ear facing up for about 1 or 2 minutes to allow the medication to come into contact with the infection. You can gently insert a sterile cotton plug to prevent this drug from leaking out of the ear.

To keep this drug germ-free, do not touch the applicator tip on any surface (including the eyes or ears). Also, keep the container tightly closed. For complete and effective treatment, keep using this medicine for the full time of treatment, even if your symptoms have disappeared. Do not miss any dose. Store this medication in a closed container at room temperature (less than 30⁰C), away from light, moisture, and out of children's reach. Properly discard it if it expires, or you no longer use it.

Genoptic Precautions:

Inform your doctor of any history of allergic reactions to Genoptic and its ingredients, other aminoglycoside medications, or any other medications. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have, including:
• Ear problems such as ear drum perforation;
• Eye conditions requiring the use of contact lenses and other ear problems;
• Myasthenia gravis.

Since this drug might blur your vision, do not operate heavy machinery or drive while using this drug until you know how it affects you. Before surgery, inform your doctor about this drug or any other drugs you use. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor prescribes it for you.

Certain medications interact with Genoptic, thereby potentiating or limiting its effects, although this may not always occur. Some of these include the following:
• Ataluren;
• Cidofovir;
• Digoxin;
• Pancuronium.

However, informing your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking before you start using this drug is highly important.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
