Xifaxan Information:

Xifaxan (Generic Name: Rifaximin) is a nonsystemic antibiotic medication used to treat a condition called travelers’ diarrhea caused by the common bacteria known as E.Coli in patients old than 12 years of age. Xifaxan should NOT be used if you have a fever or bloody diarrhea. Rifaximin stays in the digestive system and is not absorbed into the blood. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. Rifaximin will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu).

Xifaxan Side Effects:

Xifaxan is generally well tolerated. The most common Xifaxan side effects are abdominal pain, defecation urgency, flatulence, headache, nausea and rectal tenesmus. If you experience any severe side effects such as abdominal or stomach pain, bloody stool, or persistent diarrhea, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., itching, rash, swelling, trouble breathing), contact your doctor immediately.

Xifaxan Precautions:

Xifaxan should be discontinued if diarrhea symptoms get worse or persist more than 24-48 hours and alternative antibiotic therapy should be considered.
