Pristiq Information:

Pristiq (generic name: Desvenlafaxine) is a newer SNRI (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant. It belongs to the same class of medications as Effexor and Cymbalta. Pristiq works to alleviate depression symptoms by increasing the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine in the synaptic cleft of the brain. This increase has shown to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Pristiq is very similar in terms of effectiveness to other common antidepressants (ex. Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Cymbalta, etc.).

Pristiq Side Effects:

The chemical name of Effexor is venlafaxine while the chemical name of Pristiq is desvenlafaxine. Effexor (venlafaxine) is broken to desvenlafaxine in the body. Therefore they are very identical compounds. Both Pristiq and Effexor XR will be identical in terms of both side effects and efficacy. The most common side effects of Pristiq are as listed with the associated percentage of occurrence, include: nausea (22%), dry mouth (9%), constipation or Diarrhea (10%), fatigue (7%), headache (20%), dizziness (13%), insomnia (9%), increased sweating (10%), and decreased appetite (5%).

These side effects and the percentages correspond with Pristiq 50mg (the usual maintenance dosage), a higher dosage will produce a higher percentage of side effects. Pristiq may have an advantage over the SSRI (Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Luvox) in that it has a much lower percentage of sexual dysfunction side effects (ex. decreased desire, delayed ejaculation) than the SSRI medications. Pristiq, however, does have a higher incidence of nausea (22% with the 50mg dose) compared to other antidepressant medications.

Pristiq Directions:

Patients should not abruptly discontinue Pristiq. As with any other antidepressant, Pristiq may cause withdrawal upon discontinuation. Withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, insomnia, sweating, and worsening of depression status. Pristiq may have a marked increase in intensity of withdrawal symptoms, and these withdrawal symptoms may occur more rapidly than other antidepressants. This is because of the shorter half life of Pristiq. It is advised that the patient withdraw from Pristiq under the advice of their physician and he/she decrease gradually the dosage to minimize the withdrawal symptoms.

Pristiq Precautions:

Generally speaking Pristiq is not considered to interact with a large number of other medications. Some medications may have potential drug interactions, include MAO inhibitors (ex. Moclobemide), other SSRI medications, lithium, linezolid, sibutramine, eletriptan, sumatriptan, and warfarin.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
