Pristiq Information:

Pristiq (generic name: Desvenlafaxine) is a newer SNRI (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant. It belongs to the same class of medications as Effexor and Cymbalta. Pristiq works to alleviate depression symptoms by increasing the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine in the synaptic cleft of the brain. Pristiq may have a marked increase in intensity of withdrawal symptoms, and these withdrawal symptoms may occur more rapidly than other antidepressants. This is because of the shorter half life of Pristiq. It is advised that the patient withdraw from Pristiq under the advice of their physician and he/she decrease gradually the dosage to minimize the withdrawal symptoms.
