Evista (generic name: Raloxifene HCl) is an approved medication for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. It is also used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in post-menopausal women who have osteoporosis, or women who are at risk of invasive breast cancer. It belongs to the group of drugs called estrogen antagonists. It is not know exactly how raloxifene works, but in the bones it appears to mimic estrogen, which is essential to bone health. In the breasts, it appears to block the effect of estrogen. In women who go through the menopause, the estrogen levels drop quickly, which results in a breakdown of the bone causing the bones to become less dense. This leads to osteoporosis which causes fractures and bone breakages. In breast cancer, the cancerous cells and surrounding tissue need estrogen to continue their growth and to help the cells to migrate, however Evista blocks the estrogen and therefore the cells cannot grow or move.
