Quinine Sulfate Information:

Quinine Sulfate (generic name: quinine, qualaquin) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of malaria. Malaria is a disease caused by parasites. Quinine belongs to the group of drugs called anti-malarials. Parasites that cause malaria are usually passed to the body through mosquito bites. The organism that causes malaria is classed as protozoa. During a bite from a mosquito, the parasite passes into the body and once it is inside, it lives and reproduces which results in the malaria infection. In the blood, the parasites break down haemoglobin. When this happens, the haemoglobin breaks down into two parts haem and globin. Haem is toxic to the parasites, and to prevent damage to the parasites, the parasites generate a chemical which makes the haem into a non-toxic compound. Quinine works by binding itself to the DNA of the parasite. This prevents the parasite from reproducing, and controls the infection so that the patient can recover. Quinine Sulfate is also used for symptoms of restless leg syndrome (RLS, leg cramps).

Quinine Sulfate Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Quinine Sulfate including headache, blurred vision, dizziness, increased sweating, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, warmth or redness of the skin. More serious side effects may include loss of appetite, fever, chills, weakness, severe vomiting and stomach pain, severe diarrhea, cheat pain, trouble breathing, changes in heartbeat, weak or shallow breathing, feeling faint, urinating less, problems with vision, sore throat and jaundice (yellowing of the skin around eyes, hands and feet). If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Quinine Sulfate Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Quinine Sulfate to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Quinine Sulfate comes in tablet and capsule form. You should swallow Quinine Sulfate whole with a glass of water. Do not open the capsule, and do not crush, break or chew the tablets as this could result in too much of the drug being released at once. If Quinine upsets the stomach, take with food. Quinine Sulfate should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat. You must take Quinine for the prescribed length of time, which usually includes time before and after leaving a high risk zone.

Quinine Sulfate Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Quinine Sulfate, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including heart disease, history of long QT syndrome, myasthenia gravis, optic neuritis, low potassium levels, liver or kidney disease and glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Quinine Sulfate, including arsenic trioxide, atorvastatin, cimetidine, dextromethorphan, digoxin, droperidol, rifamin, metoprolol, aminophylline, blood thinners, antidepressants, other anti-malarials, heart medications, nausea or vomiting medications, psychiatric medications, migraine or headache medications, narcotic medications and seizure medications. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Quinine Sulfate may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
