How Xenical Works
Whenever you eat too much of fat or calories, the excess amount is stored
as fat by the body which results in increased weight. When you eat fat,
your body breaks down the fat into its simplest components so that it can
be digested.
XENICAL works in your digestive system to block about one-third of the fat
in the food you eat from being digested. Unlike other weight-loss drugs
you may have heard about the medications that act in the brain or central
nervous system to suppress appetite or to speed up metabolism.
Lipases, it means enzymes in your digestive system help digest or break
down the fat. When Xenical is taken with meals it attaches with the lipases
and blocks those from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten. The
undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated in your bowel movements.
By working this way, XENICAL helps block about one-third of the fat in the
foods you eat from being absorbed by your body.
Xenical is used in the management of obesity in adult and
adolescent patients age 12 and older; this medicine is a gastrointestinal
lipase inhibitor. During the weight loss phase or following weight loss
to assist in weight management, Xenical may be used. It should be used with
a reduced-calorie diet.
