What other drugs will affect Paxil?
If you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid
(Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) during the
last 2 weeks, it is recommended not to take Paxil. When these medicines
have been taken along with Paxil then serious, and sometimes fatal, reactions
have occurred. Also, if you are taking thioridazine (Mellaril), do not take
Paxil. If these medicines are taken together their chances of Dangerous,
even fatal irregular heartbeats may occur. Before taking thioridazine (Mellaril),
you must wait 5 weeks after stopping Paxil
. It is recommended that before using Paxil tell your doctor if you are
taking—
- a tricyclic antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine
(Tofranil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), and others;
- digoxin (Lanoxin);
- a benzodiazepine such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), chlordiazepoxide
(Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion),
and others;
- cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB);
- lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others);
- almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan (Frova), sumatriptan (Imitrex), naratriptan
(Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt), or zolmitriptan (Zomig);
- a phenothiazine such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin),
mesoridazine (Serentil), perphenazine (Trilafon), prochlorperazine (Compazine),
and others;
- a benzodiazepine such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), chlordiazepoxide
(Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion),
and others;
- warfarin (Coumadin);
- carbamazepine (Tegretol) or phenytoin (Dilantin);or
- theophylline (Theobid, Theolair, Theochron, Elixophyllin, and others).
If you are taking any of the medicines listed above then you may not be
able to take Paxil, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring
during treatment.
Consult with your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or
over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products. Drugs other than
those listed here may also interact with Paxil or affect your condition.
Paxil
is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder
(OCD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia) and generalized anxiety disorders
(GAD); this medicine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).
The balance of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters)
is restored with the help of SSRIs. Paroxetine can also be used in other
circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your doctor including severe
premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), sexual problems
in men (premature ejaculation), nerve problems associated with diabetes
(diabetic neuropathy), chronic headaches, or post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD). |
