Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
What is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)?
When a person has to meet a deadline or deliver a presentation, he or she
feels nervous and worried form tie to time. But if a person feels a regular
and overstated sense of worry interferes with their daily life than it means
he or she has a problem of GAD. People suffering from GAD tend to feel worse
while dealing with issues such as related to money, health, family, or work,
even when there is no sign of trouble. What are the symptoms
of GAD?
There can be few symptoms or may be many symptoms of GAD which a person
could suffer from. The signs of GAD which are difficult to control are anxiety
and worry and have lasted for as a minimum 6 months. Along with excessive
anxiety and worry, people with GAD have a minimum of the following symptoms:-
Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank,
Difficulty sleeping
Restlessness or feeling on edge
Muscle tension
Irritability
Fatigue
Some additional symptoms related to GAD include:
Physical symptoms such as clammy hands, dry mouth, sweating, nausea or diarrhea,
an increased need to urinate, trouble swallowing, and an exaggerated response
to being surprised. Also, Symptoms associated with muscle tension, such
as trembling, twitching, feeling shaky, and muscle aches and soreness.
It has been also seen that people suffering from GAD often has symptoms
of depression as well. It has also been noticed and 2 studies found that
between 58% and 70% of people who suffered from GAD in their lifetime have
also suffered from depression at some point.
What are the causes of GAD?
Some studies and research has put forward that GAD may run in families.
When a person is under stress, GAD may also grow worse. While the accurate
causes of GAD are not known, but it may be due to a chemical imbalance in
the brain. 2 chemicals used by some nerve cells to communicate are Serotonin
and norepinephrine. Along with other neurotransmitters, these 2 chemicals
are thought to be linked to GAD. Therefore, medications that affect these
neurotransmitters may play a role in treating GAD.
Paxil is used to treat depression,
panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder
(social phobia) and generalized anxiety disorders (GAD); this medicine is
a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The balance of certain
natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters) is restored with the
help of SSRIs. Paroxetine can also be used in other circumstances for treatment,
as if determined by your doctor including severe premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual
dysphoric disorder), sexual problems in men (premature ejaculation), nerve
problems associated with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), chronic headaches,
or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). |
