Social Anxiety Disorder
What is social anxiety disorder?
It happens that many people feel nervous while meeting new people or speaking
in front of a group. These signs of nervousness if get worse then it means
a person is suffering with social anxiety disorder, or social phobia. It
becomes very difficult for these people to function on daily basis as they
have the fear from everyday social situations. Social anxiety disorder occurs
more often in women than in men.
What are the symptoms of social anxiety disorder?
People who have the problem of Social Anxiety Disorder have an excessive
and regular fear of one or more social or public situations. The day-to-day
functioning get upsets harshly with this fear.
Other symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder may include- Intense self-consciousness
in social settings, Unreasonable fear of embarrassment, Avoiding social
situations and Physical symptoms such as blushing, sweating, trembling,
fast heartbeat, and nausea.
Also, people with social anxiety disorder often have more shyness and unease
than usual before and during social events. People with social anxiety disorder
often have increased physical symptoms in hectic situations which in turn
can increase their level of anxiety and shyness even more.
It has been noticed and studies also has shown that people with social anxiety
disorder often experience other types of emotional health problems such
as--they may abuse alcohol or drugs to reduce fear in social settings or
they suffer from depression or they may have other anxiety disorders as
well.
What causes social anxiety disorder?
It is not known that what the cause of social anxiety disorder is. But it
may be due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. 2 chemicals used by some
nerve cells to communicate are Serotonin and norepinephrine. Along with
other neurotransmitters, these 2 chemicals are thought to be linked to social
anxiety disorder. Therefore, medications that affect these neurotransmitters
may play a role in treating social anxiety disorder.
Paxil is used to treat depression,
panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder
(social phobia) and generalized anxiety disorders (GAD); this medicine
is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The balance of certain
natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters) is restored with the
help of SSRIs. Paroxetine can also be used in other circumstances for
treatment, as if determined by your doctor including severe premenstrual
syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), sexual problems in men (premature
ejaculation), nerve problems associated with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy),
chronic headaches, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
