About Postherpetic Neuralgia
Pain after shingles
A painful outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin caused by a reactivation
of the same virus that causes chicken pox is known as pain after
shingles or postherpetic neuralgia. Pain in the area affected by
shingles that persists at least 3 months after the initial skin rash heals,
is a pain after shingles and it is a type of neuropathic pain (nerve pain).
Symptoms of pain after shingles
Constant stabbing, burning, electric shock-like sensation, or itching are
the type of pain which are considered as the Pain after shingles. People
may experience loss of sensation (numbness) or sensitivity to light touch.
In few cases, the pain could be intolerable as some people’s skin
is so sensitive that even the lightest touch, as from clothing or bed sheets,
or a passing breeze can cause pain. Sleep disturbances can also be caused
by the pain.
