Safety Information for Avandia

Avandia, along with diet and exercise, helps improve blood sugar control. It may be prescribed alone, with metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. When taking Avandia with sulfonylureas or insulin, patients may be at increased risk for low blood sugar. Ask your doctor whether you need to lower your sulfonylurea or insulin dose.

Tiredness, weight gain or swelling may be experienced while taking Avandia.

If you have a history of heart diseases then you must tell your doctor about that because Avandia may cause fluid retention or swelling which could lead to or worsen heart failure. Inform and consult with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience an unusually rapid increase in weight, swelling or shortness of breath while taking Avandia. Avandia may increase the risk of other heart problems if taken along with insulin. While taking this medicine with insulin, consult with your doctor about important symptoms. Avandia cannot be recommended to every patient. Especially it is not recommended to patients with NYHA Class 3 and 4 cardiac status or active liver disease.

Before therapy, you must have blood tests to check for serious liver problems and should be conducted periodically, as determined by your doctor. If you experience unexplained tiredness, stomach problems, dark urine or yellowing of skin while taking Avandia, tell your doctor about that. If you have liver disease then also informs your doctor before taking Avandia.
Avandia Talk to your doctor before taking Avandia, if you are nursing, pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.

Avandia is used to treat type II diabetes; Patients with type II diabetes cannot make enough insulin, and the cells of their body do not respond normally to the reduced amounts of insulin that are present. (Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that stimulates cells to remove glucose from the blood). Anti-diabetes medicines, including metformin or insulin, as part of a diet and exercise program may be used in combination with this medicine for treatment.
