What is epilepsy?
Disorder of the brain characterized by recurrent seizures–brief,
temporary malfunctions of groups of nerve cells in the brain, is Epilepsy.
When 2 or more seizures occur in a lifetime, Epilepsy is detected.
What are the risk factors for epilepsy?
Most of the causes of epilepsy are not known but there are some risk factors
which are known. They are-• Infections of the central nervous system,
such as encephalitis or meningitis
Head injury
Brain tumors
Multiple sclerosis
Degenerative diseases of the central nervous system
Stroke
What is the impact of epilepsy on quality of life?A person’s daily
life including the ability to work and drive can be affected by Epilepsy.
It may also cause problems of social interaction and can affect self-esteem.
Ii is not only related to these causes but also linked with many other
serious conditions that may affect person’s health and may contribute
to poor seizure control. These include Sleep disturbance, Psychosis, Anxiety
and depression, Migraine, Attention deficit/hyperactivity or Cognitive
impairment.It has been noticed that a high percentage of school-age children
with epilepsy had low IQ scores, suggesting at least some mild developmental
issues. If there is long-term epilepsy also appears to have lower educational
or academic achievements
.Lyrica is used to
treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral
neuropathy (DPN) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Lyrica (pregabalin
capsules) has approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
