What is Acid Reflux Disease?

Million of people get affected by acid reflux disease, generally known as GERD. When stomach acid used for digestion repeatedly backs up, or refluxes, into the esophagus, Acid reflux disease occurs that is when the opening between the esophagus and the stomach becomes looser or relaxes at the wrong time; GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is caused. Normally, this opening allows food to travel only from your esophagus into your stomach. A muscular valve, called a sphincter, normally keeps stomach contents, including stomach acid, in the stomach. A barrier between the stomach and esophagus is created by the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is located at the bottom of the esophagus.

The stomach has lining and it protects itself from acid but this irritates the esophagus and eventually damaged because it doesn’t have a special lining to protect itself from acid. It has been noticed and studies have shown that if you lie in bed, the protective effect of gravity can become lessened.

Heartburn is the result of this irritation which may be the painful, like burning feeling. Many people get heartburn on occasion. But persistent heartburn takes two or more days a week despite treatment and diet changes could be acid reflux disease.

Can it also cause other symptoms?

Persistent heartburn is the most common symptom of acid reflux disease, but other possible symptoms are:

Belching or regurgitation
And even chest pain not related to your heart
A sour taste in your mouth, caused by refluxing acid
Persistent coughing or hoarseness
An upset stomach, or
Difficulty swallowing
Nausea and/or vomiting – for some people these symptoms can interfere with their daily lives
It’s important to consult with your doctor if you have any symptoms of this disease.
Acid reflux disease is often a chronic condition that can lead to serious complications.

Aciphex is used to treat treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; this medicine is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Acid production in the stomach is blocked when this medicine works. Antibiotics including amoxicillin or clarithromycin may be used in combination with this medicine to treat certain types of ulcers. It can also be used in other circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your doctor.
