About High blood
pressure
What is high blood pressure?
The force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels is Blood Pressure.
If something is holding back the easy flow of blood then it means the blood
pressure is high. This happens because the blood vessels have become
too narrow. At this stage, the heart has to pump harder to push blood through
narrow blood vessels.
Why are there two numbers?
It can be commonly seen that Blood Pressure is always listed as 2 numbers-
one over the other. The top number is known as systolic (“sis-STAH-lik”)
blood pressure. This is the pressure when your heart is pumping and your
blood pressure is in full force. This is a very important number to keep
under control. The other number that is bottom number is known as diastolic
(“DYE-uh-STAH-lik”) pressure. This is the pressure when your
heart is relaxed between beats and your blood pressure drops. It is also
important to control this number. Are both numbers important?
Heart attack or stroke is the possible diseases which can occur due to high
blood pressure. A person with both high blood pressure and diabetes has
a greater chance of heart disease, stroke, eye problems, kidney problems,
and nerve disease. It is important to get both your blood pressure numbers
to your goal, if you have high blood pressure. The top number (systolic)
may be the more important. If systolic pressure alone is not controlled,
it can still lead to a heart attack or stroke. When is
blood pressure too high?
High blood pressure is blood pressure that’s nearly always above 140/90.
Your doctor can only tell you what your ideal blood pressure should be.
This depends on your medical history, age and other factors. Ask your doctor,
if you do not know about what your goal blood pressure should be.
