Asacol Delayed-Release Tablet
Asacol tablets were introduced to the U.S. market in 1992. Unlike sulfasalazine,
olsalazine, and balsalazide, Asacol is not a prod rug dependent upon the
action of colonic bacteria for release of mesalamine. This tablet contains
400 mg of mesalamine, coated with a pH-sensitive acrylic polymer called
Eudragit-S, which delays release of mesalamine until the tablet reaches
an environment of pH 7 or above. This coating dissolves in the terminal
ileum or colon, is designed to deliver effective concentrations of mesalamine
to the colon with low systemic absorption. Asacol is used to treat mildly
to moderately the active ulcerative colitis and also maintain the remission
of ulcerative colitis. Take two 400-mg tablets thrice a day for 6 weeks
of duration if you are going for the treatment of mildly to moderately active
disease. For maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis, the recommended
dosage in adults is 1.6 grams daily, in divided doses.
