Drug Description
Why is this medication prescribed?
This medicine is used with diet changes to reduce the amount of cholesterol
and certain greasy substances in the blood. Pravastatin is in a class of
medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, which produce cholesterol
in the body. Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood
vessels decreases blood flow so that the oxygen supply to the heart, brain,
and other parts of the body. Lowering blood levels of cholesterol and fats
which helps to prevent heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks.
Pravastatin sodium is a fragrance-free, white to off-white in color, crystalline
powder. It is a relatively polar hydrophilic compound with a partition coefficient
(water) of 0.59 at a pH of 7.0. Pravastatin sodium soluble in methanol and
water, slightly soluble in isopropanol, and almost insoluble in acetone,
acetonitrile, chloroform.
This medicine is available for oral administration as 10, 20, 40, and 80
mg tablets. Croscarmellose sodium, lactose, magnesium oxide, mag-nesium
stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and povidone are some inactive ingredients.
The 10 mg tablet contains Red Ferric Oxide, the 20 mg and 80 mg tablets
also contain Yellow Ferric Oxide, and the 40 mg tablet also contains Green
Lake Blend (mixture of D& C Yellow No. 10-Aluminum Lake and FD&
C Blue No. 1-Aluminum Lake).
