About cholesterol
A waxy substance that is produced by the liver is known as Cholesterol.
It's also found in the foods we eat that come from animals, like meats,
eggs yolks, shellfish, and whole milk dairy products.
We all need Cholesterol. To function, our bodies need cholesterol. But if
we take too much of cholesterol then it would be bad for health.
Cholesterol gets deposited in our arteries as plaque, when we absorb too
much from the foods or when our bodies make too much cholesterol.
If you have high cholesterol, it can also depend on your family history.
Some people inherit genes associated with elevated levels of cholesterol.
This is known familial hypercholesterolemia. These people after having proper
diet and exercise also still have cholesterol. For others, diet and lifestyle
determine cholesterol levels. Their cholesterol levels get higher according
to the food they eat, the more fats they eat especially from meat and dairy
products and their cholesterol gets higher according to that.
Bad and good cholesterol
There are two main types of cholesterol that can affect your health:
“Good” cholesterol – (HDL) cholesterol
HDL cholesterol or High-density lipoprotein is known as “good cholesterol”
because this helps to remove cholesterol from the blood. Risk of coronary
heart disease can be reduced by High levels of HDL in your blood. A low
level can increase your ri
“Bad” cholesterol – (LDL) cholesterol
LDL cholesterol or Low-density lipoprotein is called as “bad cholesterol”.
Heart disease can be caused when excess LDL builds up in your arteries.
The higher the level of LDL, the higher your risk for heart disease
Triglycerides
Another type of fat carried in your blood is Triglycerides. It
is a third type of Cholesterol. Risk of heart disease can be increased if
there is a high triglyceride level. Most of the body’s fat tissue
that comes from the fat in foods is in the form of triglycerides which are
stored for energy.
Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium)
is a prescription medicine used to treat high cholesterol. It belongs to
a group of medicines — called statins — that lower cholesterol. |
