Neurontin (NUHR-on-tin) (and sometimes misspelled as Neurotin),
Firstly, to treat partial seizures neurontin may be prescribed along with
other medications. In partial seizures, the symptoms may seem somewhat limited,
and begin in a limited area of the brain. Some of them spread throughout
the rest of the brain and are called secondarily generalized seizures. Neurontin
is not used to prevent seizures that begin on both sides of the brain at
the same time. Generally this medicine is used as an additional seizure
medicine when another medication has not been able to control all of the
patient's partial seizure, called add-on or adjunctive therapy.
Secondly, Neurontin can also be used to relieve the burning nerve pain that
may continue for months or even years after having herpes zoster. Doctors
prescribe it regularly because Neurontin can and does control the pain that
follows with herpes and shingles, allowing patients to function more normally
during their day-to-day lives and even when outbreaks occur. |
