How does Combivent work?
Two active ingredients in this medicine-
- ipratropium bromide and
- salbutamol sulphate.
Salbutamol belongs to a group of medicines called short-acting beta 2 agonists. It
works by acting on receptors in the lungs called beta 2 receptors. Stimulation
of these receptors causes the muscles in the airways to relax, allowing
the airways to open.
Different types of receptors are blocked when works, these are muscarinic
receptors that are found on the muscle surrounding the airways in the lungs.
The muscle in the airways to contract is caused by stimulation of these
receptors by a natural chemical called acetylcholine, and this makes the
airways narrow. Difficulties in breathing, as is seen in asthma and bronchitis
can be caused depending on how much the receptor is stimulated. The action
of acetylcholine is stopped this is because ipratropium blocks the receptors
and allows the airways to open, making it easier to breathe
.An additive effect in opening the airways can be seen by this combination
of medicines. This makes it easier to breathe in conditions where it is
difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs, where the airways tighten,
such as chronic bronchitis.
Using an inhaler or nebuliser device, this medicine is inhaled into the
lungs; this allows the medicine to act directly in the lungs where it is
needed most. Side effects occurring in other parts of the body can also
be reduced by inhaling the medicine, as the amount absorbed into the blood
through the lungs is lower than if it is taken by mouth.
Combivent
is used to treat or prevent symptoms of asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis,
or other breathing conditions; this medicine is a bronchodilator and a beta
receptor stimulant combination. It can also be used in other circumstances
for treatment, as if determined by your doctor. |
