SERTRALINE (SER-tra-leen) is the chemical name for Zoloft.
Zoloft Common Uses
Zoloft is used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social
anxiety disorder (social phobia), and a severe form of premenstrual
syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD); this
medicine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).The
balance of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters)
is restored with the help of SSRIs. Zoloft can also be used
in other circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your
doctor.
Before Using Zoloft
There are chances that any other medicines or medical conditions
may interact with this medicine therefore all prescription and
over-the-counter medicine that you are taking should be known
by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are also taking pimozide,
weight loss medicines such as fenfluramine or sibutramine, cyproheptadine,
dextromethorphan, tryptophan, terfenadine, astemizole, pimozide,
St. John's wort, or tramadol then do not take Zoloft. If you
have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) then do not
take this medicine with, or within 14 days. Furazolidone, isocarboxazid,
linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline,
and tranylcypromine are included in MAOIs. Before starting this
medicine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines
you are taking currently. If you are taking aripiprazole, clozapine,
linezolid, lithium, metoclopramide, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, tricyclic anti-depressants
(e.g., amitriptyline), nefazodone, venlafaxine, "triptan"
migraine medicines (e.g., sumatriptan), carbamazepine, risperidone,
phenothiazines medicines such as thioridazine, or trazodone
than additional observation should be required of your dose
or condition. Without consulting doctor do not start or stop
taking the medicine. If you have any other medical conditions
including liver disease, seizures, any allergies, pregnancy,
or breast-feeding than immediately inform your doctor and if
you have any further queries regarding the medicine than contact
your doctor.
