CONJUGATED ESTROGENS (ESS-troe-jenz) is the chemical name for Premarin.

Premarin Common Uses
Premarin is used to reduce menopause symptoms (such as vaginal dryness); this medicine is a female hormone and is usually given to women who do not produce the proper amount. It can also be used in other circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your doctor.

Before Using Premarin

Warning: The chances of womb (endometrial) cancer (especially in women who receive estrogen-only hormone therapy) are increased to whom Estrogens have been reported. The risk of cancer of the ovary is also increased by Estrogens. To prevent heart disease or dementia, it is recommended not to use Estrogen-containing products. The risk of heart disease (including heart attacks), stroke, serious blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism) or leg (deep venous thrombosis), cancer of the breast, or dementia may be increased if Estrogen is taken alone or in combination with another hormone (progestin). The risk of this medicine depends on the time period of your doses or on the amount of the doses you are taking in your schedule. It will be beneficial for you if you take this medicine for a short-term time at the lowest effective dose because it will minimize the chance of serious side effects which you can have if you take it for long-term period. There are chances that any other medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine therefore all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking should be known by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are taking corticosteroids (such as prednisone), seizure medicines (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital), "blood thinners" such as warfarin, certain antifungal medicines (such as ketoconazole or itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin or erythromycin), rifampin, ritonavir, cimetidine, or St. John's wort than additional observation should be required of your dose or condition. Without consulting your doctor do not start or stop taking the medicine. If you have any other medical conditions including any personal or family history of cancer, breast lumps, womb problems (such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or cancer), heart disease (such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, congestive heart failure), stroke, diabetes, cholesterol/lipid problems, gallbladder disease, low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), high blood pressure during pregnancy (toxemia), yellowing of eyes/skin (cholestatic jaundice) during pregnancy or with past estrogen use, depression, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, kidney problems, abnormal calcium level in the blood, lupus, growths on the liver, tobacco use, if you are extremely overweight or have experienced excessive weight gain, any allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding than immediately inform your doctor. If you have a history of undiagnosed or abnormal vaginal bleeding, certain types of cancer, estrogen-dependent growths, blood clots, liver problems, certain blood disorders (porphyria), or active/recent (within the past year) stroke or heart attack, it is recommended not to use this medicine. Storage
Premarin should be stored at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F) in a tightly-sealed container and in a dry place and away from heat and direct light.
