PRAVASTATIN (PRA-va-stat-in) is the chemical name for Pravachol.
Pravachol Common Uses
Pravachol is used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels
in your blood; this medicine is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor
(also known as a "statin"). It can also be used in
other circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your
doctor.
Before Using Pravachol
There are chances that any other medicines or medical conditions
may interact with this medicine therefore all prescription and
over-the-counter medicine that you are taking should be known
by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are also taking gemfibrozil
then it is recommended not to take Pravachol. Before starting
to take this medicine, inform your doctor that you are currently
taking gemfibrozil. If you are taking fibrates (such as clofibrate
or fenofibrate), cyclosporine, or high doses of niacin (1 gram
or more per day) than additional observation should be required
of your dose or condition. Without consulting doctor do not
start or stop taking the medicine. If you have any other medical
conditions, muscle problems, alcohol use, allergies, pregnancy,
or breast-feeding than immediately inform your doctor. If you
have a history of liver conditions or abnormal liver function
test results. If you have a history of liver disease or ongoing,
abnormal liver function test results it is recommended not to
use Pravachol. You may have risk for side effects that can result
in kidney problems if certain medical conditions’, including
low blood pressure; severe infection; uncontrolled seizures;
or serious metabolic, endocrine, or electrolyte problems arises.
