PAROXETINE (pa-ROX-e-teen) is the chemical name for Paxil.
Paxil Common Uses
Paxil is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive
compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
and generalized anxiety disorders (GAD); this medicine is a
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The balance of
certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters)
is restored with the help of SSRIs. Paroxetine can also be used
in other circumstances for treatment, as if determined by your
doctor including severe premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual
dysphoric disorder), sexual problems in men (premature ejaculation),
nerve problems associated with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy),
chronic headaches, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Before Using Paxil
There are chances that any other medicines or medical conditions
may interact with this medicine therefore all prescription and
over-the-counter medicine that you are taking should be known
by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are also taking paroxetine-containing
product; fenfluramine; dexfenfluramine; astemizole; terfenadine;
clozapine; thioridazine; selegiline; sibutramine; or tramadol
then do not take this medicine. If you have taken a monoamine
oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) then do not take this medicine with,
or within 14 days. Furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide,
phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, and tranylcypromine are
included in MAOIs. Before starting this medicine, inform your
doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking
currently. If you are taking aripiprazole, cyproheptadine, lithium,
metoclopramide, weight-loss medicines, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, atomoxetine, risperidone,
"triptan" medicines for migraines such as sumatriptan,
trazodone, or tricyclic antidepressants than additional observation
should be required of your dose. Without consulting doctor do
not start or stop taking the medicine. If you have any other
medical conditions including seizures, allergies, pregnancy,
or breast-feeding than immediately inform your doctor and if
you have any further queries regarding the medicine than contact
your doctor.
