LAMOTRIGINE (la-MOE-tri-jeen) is the chemical name for
Lamictal.
Lamictal Common Uses
Lamictal is used alone or with other medicines to treat
seizure disorders; this medicine is an anticonvulsant.
For Children: It is restricted to use this medicine in
children age 2 to 15 years of age and those having certain
types of seizures (partial or Lennox-Gastaut type). It
can also be used in other circumstances for treatment,
as if determined by your doctor.
Before Using Lamictal
While using this medicine, hardly ever, serious (sometimes
fatal) skin rashes have occurred. More commonly these
rashes including Stevens-Johnson syndrome can be found
in children(less than 16 years old) than in adults. Children
who have partial seizures or seizures associated with
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome may only use Lamictal. If you
develop any type of rash immediately consult with your
doctor. It is recommended that immediately stop using
this medicine if rash has been caused due to Lamictal.
Sometimes it also happen for the rash to cause permanent
or life-threatening scars along with other problems, even
after stopping the use of this medicine. At beginning
of the treatment using too much doses or exceeding the
dose advised by doctor or taking valproic acid with lamotrigine
may increase the chances of a rash. At starting this medicine,
within 2 to 8 weeks most life-threatening rashes have
occurred. After using this medicine for 6 months serious
rashes have also occurred. There are chances that any
other medicines or medical conditions may interact with
this medicine therefore all prescription and over-the-counter
medicine that you are taking should be known by your doctor
or pharmacist. If you are taking other medicines for seizures
(e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid, methsuximide,
phenobarbital, primidone), or birth-control pills than
additional observation should be required of your dose
or condition. Without consulting doctor do not start or
stop taking the medicine. If you have any other medical
conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding than
immediately inform your doctor and if you have any further
queries regarding the medicine than contact your doctor.
Storage
Lamictal should be stored at room temperature between
15 and 30°C (59-86°F) in a tightly-sealed container
and in a dry place and away from heat and direct light..
